When we pray, it is our way of saying God i let you into my life and i acknowledge that i am nothing without you.

We all pray and Hear God differently.

However it is important we pray in accordance to Gods commands and avoid some of these mistakes which i would be mentioning.

1) putting God in a box when you pray

for about two weeks now i have been praying to God to teach me to

  • Acknowledge, understand and Embrace his love fully,

Looking for love in the wrong places was something i was seriously tired of

I knew and i know God loves me but for some reason i just couldn’t feel it and i was beginning to slowly drift away, looking for other things to satisfy my desires .

i left my city to go for a children’s camp  about two and half hours away from where i lived,

to teach the kids English and also to heal and  start all over again.

The prayer i mentioned above actually started when i got to this camp..

For someone like me who is used to hearing God in a particular kind of way this period became a teaching moment for me.

it was as though God used my prayer to show me another aspect of my life which i needed to make adjustments to.

So while i was waiting for God to

  • Either reveal something to me in a dream or
  • just drop a word in my spirit

Because these were the ways i was used to hearing God speak to me,

instead this time around He came through the kids.

On some of my very low days, there was this particular kid who would always come and give me a very big hug, smile at me and walk away.

Then there was another kid who constantly kept on saying to me I LOVE YOU BEAUTY.

God used this scenario to remind me about a prophet in the Bible called Elijah,

Elijah ran from Jezebel and went to hide in the wilderness, during this period God spoke to Him and he heard God in a totally different way. The bible says in

1st kings Chapter 19 verse 11 to 13

Verse 11

Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain; it was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake

Verse 12

And after the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was the sound of a gentle whisper

Verse 13

When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his scarf and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

And a voice said, “Why are you here, Elijah?”

  • wind
  • earthquake
  • fire

These were the ways God used to speak to the people in the time past and it wasn’t an uncommon thing for Elijah to expect to hear Gods voice through these mediums.

But God spoke through a Still small voice… the most unconventional way.

Whatever it is you are praying about, keep an open mind… Remember Gods ways isn’t our ways neither are his thoughts ours.

Do not miss out of an answer to a prayer because you were busy searching in the wrong places.

2) wanting God to conform to your Desires.

Most times when we pray, we tend to forget about what Gods will is concerning that particular issue.

in the place of prayer

  • we are broken,
  • stripped off of the things which are not in alignment with Gods will for us
  • chiseled and shaped into what God wants us to be.

So just like the clay in the hands of the potter we need to come to a place where regardless of what our needs are at the end of the day we say GOD LET YOUR WILL BE DONE.

James Chapter 4 verse 3 says

And even when you do ask you don’t get it because your whole aim is wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure.

God will never bend his ways to suit yours, when you trust Him you will never be led astray.

3) you are not specific with what you want.

once upon a time i told my dad i needed money, but did not give him a specific amount, he felt i just needed some change to recharge my phone so he sent someone to give me something really little.

I called him to complain and tell him the money wasn’t enough and he said you did not tell me specifically what you wanted.

God knows our thoughts and our needs even before we ask but he requires us to make our request known to him anyways.

You get what you ask for (in accordance to his will of course).

Matthew chapter 7 verse 7 says

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Go straight to the point with your desires… learning to be specific with God concerning my needs has made a huge difference in my life.

4) you pray full of doubt

sadly we trust the seats we sit on more than we trust the God who created the universe in 7 days

James chapter 1 verse 5 to 8 sums it all up

Verse 5

If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you, for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask him; he will not resent it

Verse 6

But when you ask him, be sure that you really expect him to tell you, for a doubtful mind will be as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind;

Verse 7 and 8

and every decision you then make will be uncertain, as you turn first this way and then that. If you don’t ask with faith, don’t expect the Lord to give you any solid answer.

The christian life is a life of faith and total dependence on God. Ask God to teach you to trust Him.

Thank you so much for reading

Feel free to leave your comments i love to hear what each of you has to say.

Have a lovely day.

  1. Well said/written. Prayer is a spiritual interaction between a man (a son) and God (his father). One who prays must be ready to hear God speak. He should pray in faith and never doubt. When he prays, he exercises authority and make power available for whatever he is praying about.

  2. Wow Doc! This is an awesome post. Now when I pray I just ask His will to be done in my life, and I’ve started to see changes. God bless you for this post❤❤

  3. Beauty– I so need to keep this in mind: “Verse 5

If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you, for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask him; he will not resent it”
    Thank you
